Hidden cameras hide in objects you expect to see
A covert camera needs three things: a view, power and somewhere unremarkable to sit. The devices found in homes, hotel rooms and offices are almost always built into, or disguised as, an object nobody questions, with a line of sight to the bed, the sofa, the desk, the meeting table or the bathroom door.
Smoke detectors and ceiling fittings give a high, central vantage over the whole room and constant mains power. Alarm clocks and clock radios sit on the bedside table facing the bed. USB chargers and plug adaptors are cameras the size of a plug, pointing wherever the socket faces. Air fresheners, mirrors, the television, the router, picture frames, plant pots and ornaments all offer a plausible reason to sit exactly where the view is best. A camera or microphone wired into the mains behind a socket plate or a light switch has nothing to charge and, if it records locally, nothing to find on Wi-Fi.
Our guide to hidden camera detection in hotel rooms and short-lets walks through the ten-minute self-check a traveller can do on arrival. This page is about what happens when a self-check is not enough.
Who books hidden camera detection in Ghana
The people who call us share one thing: a specific, credible reason to believe a private space is being watched, and a cost of being wrong that is high.
- Individuals in a divorce, custody or contentious legal dispute, where the person with the strongest motive to watch is often the one with the easiest access to the home.
- Executives and high-profile clients whose residences, guest quarters and home offices are the soft target an adversary reaches when the boardroom is out of reach.
- Travellers and extended-stay guests in hotels, serviced apartments and short-lets in Accra, where others held the keys before you.
- Organisations whose boardroom, executive office or meeting room has had a contractor, cleaner or “maintenance” visit that nobody can account for.
Why a torch and a phone app are not a sweep
A torch sweep in a darkened room finds a lens with an open aperture facing you. It does not find a camera behind a smoked panel, a device that stays dormant until motion wakes it, a unit that records to a memory card and never transmits, or anything wired into the building rather than plugged into it. Phone apps that claim to find cameras either scan the Wi-Fi network you happen to be connected to or react to the magnetometer, and neither is dependable.
The self-check removes the crude, mass-produced devices from the picture. For anyone who is genuinely a target, that is a poor guarantee.
How we find hidden cameras
Hidden camera detection follows the same four stages as every Forensic TSCM engagement: survey, RF map, technical and physical inspection, then report and mitigation. Each stage closes a different gap.
Survey. We establish which rooms matter, who has had access and when, and map the lines of sight to the places where a camera would have something to see. That turns a search of the whole building into a directed inspection.
RF map. Government-grade spectrum analysers baseline the radio environment, so a camera streaming over Wi-Fi or the mobile network stands out against what the room normally carries. Cyber TSCM profiles the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth activity around the space for device names and traffic consistent with a camera on the network.
Technical and physical inspection. This is where most devices are found, because the dangerous ones are the quiet ones. Thermal imaging reveals a powered device concealed behind a wall, a ceiling or a fixture by the heat it cannot switch off. IR probes and laser detection identify optical and infrared paths. Every plausible concealment point — fittings, fixtures, furniture, outlets, switches, cable runs, mirrors and the objects on every line of sight — is physically examined, square inch by square inch.
Report and mitigation. A device that is found is documented in place rather than pulled out: what it is, where it was, what it could see and, where it can be established, where its footage was going. It is then removed under an agreed plan that protects the evidence where a legal or domestic dispute may follow. You receive the findings privately, with countermeasures for the way the device got in.
If you think a camera is in the room right now
Say nothing about it in the room. If the space is watched, it may also be heard. Do not remove, unplug or move anything you find: pulling a device out destroys the evidence of how it was installed and, if it carries a microphone, announces the discovery to whoever is listening. Photograph it in place if you can do so without drawing attention, leave the room, and arrange the sweep from somewhere else, on a phone you trust.
Hidden camera detection across Accra and Ghana
We sweep homes, hotel rooms, serviced apartments, short-lets and offices in Accra, Tema, Kumasi and Takoradi, and across West Africa. The same government-grade instrumentation used in corporate work applies, sized to a domestic environment where a single hidden camera is the whole threat, and reported with the discretion a private matter demands. Where the concern extends beyond cameras, the wider engagement is a residential and executive home sweep, a hotel and off-site meeting sweep or a corporate bug sweep; where it is one strand of a pattern, start with our counter-espionage services.
